A SCHOOL in Burton has received a heart defibrillator as part of a Healthy Heart campaign in the West Midlands.

Pupils and teachers at Richard Wakefield C of E Primary Academy, part of The de Ferrers Trust, recently accepted the life-saving device, which was donated by staff at commercial vehicle distributor Hartshorne Group.

The device comes with voice instructions and can be used by an adult to restart a heart in an emergency. It was supplied as a result of a partnership between Hartshorne Group and West Midlands Ambulance Service.

School Principal Mrs Joanne Lowe said: "The children were excited to see the Volvo truck and it's reassuring to know we have safe access to a defibrillator on site which can be accessed by the local community during school hours."

Hartshorne Group, which supplies Volvo trucks and buses, is raising funds to install further defibrillators at key locations. The company donates £1 for every hour of physical activity recorded by its staff via an app.

Phil Brookfield, Operations Director, at Hartshorne, said: “We'd like to thank everybody at Richard Wakefield for being so welcoming. It's fantastic to be able to support a local school in Burton. Our team have now recorded over 1,800 hours of physical activity covering 10,000 miles and we'll be placing more defibrillators in schools."

Hartshorne has also installed the devices at all of its nine depots, which include sites in Birmingham, Walsall and Shrewsbury. The devices are registered on a national database in conjunction with the NHS.

Earlier this year Hartshorne hosted a training session for its staff that was delivered by Andy Jeynes, Community Response Manager at West Midlands Ambulance Service.
